Video vendor or production studio: a difference that changes your entire working relationship

The corporate video market is filled with two types of players that look similar on the surface but operate very differently. Understanding the distinction will help you choose the right partner for your need — and avoid disappointment.

The video vendor

A vendor is generally one or two professionals executing an order. You arrive with a precise brief, they deliver it. They can be excellent in their field — camera op, editor, motion designer. They’re often more available and quicker to mobilize.

What they sometimes lack: the global strategic vision, the capacity to take charge of an entire complex project, and the resources to manage multi-day productions with several crews.

The production studio

A studio like Signs is a structure with several integrated expertises: directing, art direction, production, post-production. We take on the entire project — from brief to deliverables — with a single point of contact who coordinates every step.

We also bring something an isolated vendor can’t easily offer: an editorial perspective on your brief. We don’t just answer your request — we question the assumptions, propose angles, identify risks upstream.

When to pick which

Pick a vendor when: you have a very precise, narrow brief, you don’t need strategic guidance, your budget is tight and the project is simple.

Pick a studio when: your project involves several shoot days, multiple deliverables, several internal stakeholders to coordinate, and when you expect a premium result that will represent your brand for years.

The tell that doesn’t lie

A studio asks you questions before giving you a price. A vendor gives you a price before understanding your project. Neither is bad in itself — they just don’t answer the same need.
