Ever since TikTok made 9:16 the mobile standard, we regularly hear comms leads declare that they “want to switch to vertical.” The right question isn’t “which is better” — it’s “which serves your distribution goal.”
Horizontal (16:9): cinema, depth, prestige
16:9 is the natural format of the human eye. It embraces the wide field, it breathes, it allows reverse shots, sets, careful compositions. It’s the reference format for:
- Websites and in-room presentations
- YouTube (over 80% of views happen on big screens)
- Corporate films built to last
- Any content projected on screen
A corporate film shot horizontally and viewed on a meeting laptop still feels premium. No vertical format can compete in that context.
Vertical (9:16): reach, fluidity, organic feel
Vertical is the natural format of the scrolling thumb. On Instagram Reels, TikTok and LinkedIn (since 2023), it captures attention in a passive consumption context. It’s perfect for:
- Short discovery content (15–60 seconds)
- Employer brand content on social
- Spontaneous testimonials and behind-the-scenes
- Recruitment campaigns targeting Gen Z
The reframe trap
Shooting in 16:9 and “reframing for vertical” for social is the worst middle ground. You lose compositions, you crop heads, you create reframing blur. If you need both formats, plan for it in the brief — and shoot key scenes natively in both formats.
Our approach at Signs
We systematically shoot in 16:9 with a “vertical safe-zone” framing: the important subjects stay in the central part of the image, which allows clean reframing. For projects that anticipate heavy social distribution, we plan dedicated 9:16 takes. That’s 20% more shoot time — but 100% consistency across all platforms.
